The American education system has had limited success in helping students from historically marginalized communities develop reading skills. For example, the proficiency rate for black students in eighth grade is about 15%. The rate for Hispanic eighth graders is only slightly higher at 22%. To help educators increase equity, Julie Russ Harris, Ed.M., Program Manager at Lexia® Learning, a Cambium Learning® Group Company, and Paul Macaruso, Ph.D., Lexia Senior Research Consultant, will host a virtual session on April 23 at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
AERA selected Harris and Dr. Macaruso’s paper “Cultural Responsiveness in Building Educational Technologies for Adolescent Students” to be presented as part of the meeting’s overall theme of cultivating equitable education systems. Session participants will learn how to design and continually update an educational technology program so that it is culturally inclusive and engages and motivates a wide range of students.
As a curriculum manager, Harris provides instructional direction and leadership to support the development of literacy programs. She has co-authored book chapters and articles focused on reading development and instruction, including the book, Cultivating Knowledge, Building Language: Teaching Literacy for Elementary English Learners.
In addition to being a Senior Research Consultant at Lexia, Dr. Macaruso is a Professor of Psychology at Community College of Rhode Island. He has published numerous research studies in the areas of reading, including the acquisition of reading skills, developmental and acquired dyslexia, and the use of technology to support reading instruction.
Attendees will need to register for the AERA conference to view the virtual session. Registration rates and additional information are available at https://www.aera.net/Events-Meetings/Annual-Meeting/2022-Annual-Meeting-Registration-Information-and-Rates
